Experiencing Italy - Livorno, Tirrenia & Pisa

Day 7 Florence/Livorno

April 5
This morning we left Florence and took the train to Livorno. We walked to our apartment and after making sandwiches we headed to Piazza Della Rebubblica to catch a bus to Tirrenia. This is the actual town my Dad drew up in when they lived in Italy. It's about 8 miles north of Livorno. Grandpa worked out on Camp Darby for the Core of Engineers. Most of the base is now owned by the Italians.
We checked out the town square that my dad would hang out with his friends. It was more of a park in the middle of their small town.
From there we walked to my dad's house. We took pictures and just looked at it. I tried ringing the bell to see if someone was home hoping to get a tour. No one answered so we could only admire the outside.
My dad had told us lots of stories of the beach he hung out at every day. It was only 3-4 blocks from his house. None of the beach front restaurants were open yet but they were all using tractors to flatten out the sand so you could tell they are getting ready for the season to start. We took pictures, gathered seashells and just relaxed.

Since we were only 30 minutes via the bus from Pisa we decided to hop on and go see the Leaning Tower. It was quite amazing and I didn't realize there were so many other structures around it. We took the classic pictures and then headed back to Livorno....or so we thought.
At this point we made a few bad choices. Instead of eating for the Rossa bus to take us back to the central station we decided to walking. We saw some cool stuff but got lost. By the time we finally found a bus back we could only get as far as Calabrone. This is the town between Livorno and Tirrenia. We had missed the last bus to Livorno by 10 minutes. We had to calla cab from Livorno to come and get us. Cost 30 euros and too much of our time! Next time we will pay more attention to bus schedules.

Garlan took a down day and had stayed behind to rest and relax.  Here are some pictures he took of the sunset over Livorno.
