Day 8 Livorno / Monterosso
April 6
We
walked around Livorno and checked out their open food market and the
docks. It is much larger than I pictured it in my head. We watched old
men fixing their nets and getting their boats ready to go fishing. We
could also see the large cruise ships stopping at the port.
We packed up and walked the long 1.2 miles to catch our train to Monterosso.
We
arrived in Monterosso and I fell in love immediately. The colorful
buildings that sit on the water and up in the mountains are beautiful.
The Mediterranean sea is very blue. You can see why tourists flood here
to spend the summer.
We
dropped our bags off at our apartment and walked the city, the
boardwalk and the beach. Michele got her fish that she had been craving.
For dinner we went to L 'osteria. The food was soooooo yummy!
I can't wait to hike the trail tomorrow.

Day 9 Monterosso
April 7
Talk
about an intense hike!!!! We had read it was about 5 hours but that was
false. It took us closer to 8 and we were at a decent pace.
We
started around 8:30 in the morning and went from Monterosso to Vernazza
to Corniglia to Volastra to Manarola to Riomaggiore. We took the train
back to Monterosso. It was absolutely gorgeous with some breathtaking
views of each city and the ocean. The trail took us through each town
which all were similar but at the same time different. Vernazza had a
few beaches but the lower 3 didn't seem to have any beaches. The water
is a very pretty blue and it was tempting to jump in on several
occasions but non of us wanted to hike in wet clothes. There were lots
of grape vineyards cut out of the mountainsides. As we hiked we could see
the farmers working their land. Most of the trail went right through
their farmlands. The trail through Vernazza and Corniglia were the
longest but the trails from Corniglia to the end at Riomaggiore were
super tough. Basically straight up and the straight down several times
for very long stretches. I think we all said some swear words and wanted
to cry on more than one occasion. It was brutal and tomorrow our legs
will most likely be very sore. But it was totally worth it to see and
experience the Italian coastal mountains. I wish I could stay here on
the beach for the next week and just relax.
For dinner we got yummy fish and chips and of course gelato and then took hot showers before crawling into bed.
